Denver and the ski season

While you won't find a lot of downhill skiing in Denver, it is a great jumping off point for Colorado skiing. In fact, there are a couple of ski areas close enough to Denver that you can drive up, spend the day skiing, and get back to Denver in time for dinner.

We call the ski areas closest to Denver "day ski areas" because they have no overnight accommodations and are for people to drive up, ski and go home. My personal favorite is the Loveland Ski Area but I also like Arapahoe Basin. Both of these areas can be reached by driving west on I-70 and both are only about 90 minutes from downtown Denver.

There are other areas that can be skied on a day trip -- for example, Keystone, Breckenridge and Copper Mountain. All three are all in Summit County and are about a two-hour drive from Denver. Winter Park is also about two hours from Denver via Berthoud Pass. Winter Park Ski Area was owned by the City of Denver for many years and was primarily a day ski area. However, the City sold the area a few years and it is now owned by a corporation. Unlike Arapahoe Basin and Loveland, these four areas are "destination areas,"  meaning that they have lots of accommodations and restaurants and many out-of-state skiers go there for five, six or seven days.

One word of warning. The three Summit County ski areas are reached via the Eisenhower Tunnel which tends to really bottleneck Sunday afternoons as the Denver skiers head home. So, if you will be returning to Denver on a Sunday afternoon, you might want to spend the day skiing Winter Park which allows you to miss the Tunnel entirely

Why this site is different

I think this site is unique in that I accept no bookings or reservations, nor do I try to be everything to everybody.

The information you will find here is not based on what some company has paid me to say. It's all based on my personal experiences and my judgment as to places where you will like to stay, restaurants where you will want to eat, and the attractions and entertainment you are most likely to enjoy.

I've included maps and directions that can help you get around Denver faster and easier, as well as addresses and phone numbers for places to stay and eat.

You will also find important information about transportation around Denver – taxis, buses, car rentals and our own Light Rail system – and about our weather and what to wear in the city and mountains. Plus, I've included a listing of Denver's best shopping.

In other words, think of this site as your own, personal tour guide who's dedicated to helping you enjoy the best of Denver – for the best Denver vacation.
