Chinese restaurants

Denver offers many, and I mean many, Chinese restaurants. In fact, at times, it seems there is a Chines restaurant on every corner. In some cases, they are even run by people of Chinese descent.

My personal favorite is ...

Imperial Chinese Restaurant

The Imperial is a short drive from downtown Denver at 431 S. Broadway. I love this restaurant and so do most of us as it is usually voted one of Denver's best Chinese restaurants.

You will never mistake the Imperial's décor as anything but what it is – a great Chinese restaurant. The dining room is large but has strategically-placed partitions that a feeling of privacy. It features all the supurb Chinese dishes you would suppose – sweet and spicy sesame chicken, Shanghai duck with black mushrooms, bok choy, sea bass with pine nuts and on and on.

The Imperial always rates as one of Denver's best Chinese reataurants and for good reason. The service is excellent, the prices acceptable, and food impeccable. People (besides me) who have eaten there say things like “the best dim sum I have ever eaten,” “I love this place; the food is terrific,” and “if you could go to only one Chinese restaurant, this should be it.”

If you love Chinese food, you just must make the Imperial one of your stops while in Denver.

Twin Dragon

A bit further south on Broadway at 3021 S. Broadway is my second favorite Chinese restaurant, the Twin Dragon.

The Twin Dragon features features crispy duck, whole fish and everything in between. My favorite dishes are the fresh and flavorful moo shu pork and the orange-peel chicken. Nturally, there is also the old standbyes, General Tso's Chicken, Twice-cooked Pork, Sweet & Sour Shrimp and so on. I can honestly say I have never run into a person who has eaten at the Twin Dragon who didn't think the food was excellent. The décor at the Twin Dragon is what you would expect from an upscale and classic Chinese restaurant – Buddha statues, hanging lanyards and a lot of gold trim. BTW, this is also the place for really wacky drinks like the Flaming Volcano, Mai-Tais, and Zombies, all served in Ticki-style glasses with skulls, bamboo shoots and dancing wahines.

P.F. Chang's Chinese Bistro

A relative newcomer to the downtown Denver scene is P.F. Chang's Chinese Bistro. It's part of a chain but don't hold this against it. I haven't eaten at the downtown Chang's, but have eaten at the Chang's in Park Meadows and the food was excellent. The waitstaff is friendly, there's a nice ambience and the servings are large.

The décor in Chang's is very upscale as is its cuisine. Its signature dishes include diced chicken wrapped in cool lettuce leaves, orange-peel beef with chili peppers, and wok-fried scallops with lemon sauce. Many people (me, included) find the food to be on the pricey side for a Chinese restaurant, but others report that the quality of the food justifies the prices. But here's my caveat: Not everybody rates P.F.Chang's as a top restaurant. I include it as a recommendation because

I've had a good experience with Chang's but others have found the food to be mediocre. I just can't explain this disparity of opinions – maybe it depends on the chef at work at the time.
