Denver weather

Denver has more moderate winters and warmer summers than you might expect. For example, the temperature in Denver in January averages a high of 44o and a low of 26o. June temperatures average a high of 80o and a low of 52o. In July, the average high is 88o and the average low 58o .

Now, having said that, here comes my warning: There is no typical in Denver. I can remember a February 3rd when the temperature was 15o below zero, and I have seen snow in April and September. The secret to handling the weather in Denver is be prepared and this means be prepared to dress in layers.

For example, I often play golf in January (that's right, you can actually golf year 'round here). When I do, I often wear a long-sleeved tee shirt, a sweater and a wind shirt. That way, I can take off layers as the day grows warmer or, conversely, put them back on if the temperature starts to drop.

Assuming you will be visiting here in the summer, I suggest both short-sleeved shirts, a sweater and a rain- and wind-proof jacket. You may not need the last two items but, if you do, you'll be darn glad you brought them.

You should also know about our afternoon cloud cover. We get clouds that roll in almost on schedule about 2:00 to 3:00 PM almost every day throughout the summer. The clouds will look mean and nasty and you'll be convinced we're going to get a thunderstorm. While we will get thunder and wind, we often get no rain. In most cases, the clouds will just move off to the east by 6:00 to 7:00 PM and the skies will be that awesome, cobalt blue we love to put on our postcards.

One final note on the weather. Don't worry too much about rain. We only get about 12” of precipitation a year – and that's both rain and snow.
